Moving house in Spain: what do I do about electricity and gas?
Moving is a common moment for billing mistakes. Read the meters on both days and tell your supplier in time.
📜 The rules in Spain
The market
Households can freely choose their electricity and gas supplier. Next to the free market there are regulated options: the PVPC for electricity (up to 10 kW) and the TUR for gas (up to 50,000 kWh a year). New retail rules (Real Decreto 88/2026) apply since February 2026.
Switching supplier
The new supplier arranges the switch. Electricity: within 10 working days of signing (15 in complex cases), and no switching fee for normal household tariffs (2.0TD). Gas: free and within 3 weeks.

📇 Who to contact
❓ Questions
Can I take my contract with me?
Often yes, within the same country. Otherwise moving usually lets you end it.
What if the supply is off at the new home?
Contact a supplier or the grid operator to have it connected.
Who pays for energy between tenants?
The person on the contract pays until the move is reported. That is why the meter reading matters.
