How long is the passport valid and what does it cost?
Conditional, but the Portuguese passport is currently valid 5 years for adults. Validity is 5 years (adults) and 2 years for children under 4 (up to 5 years for older minors). Issuance always requires in-person capture of biometrics (photo, fingerprints, signature) and a valid Citizen Card. You apply at registries/IRN, Citizen's Shops or the Passport Shop at Lisbon Airport. For minors under 18, you need the minor's document and the presence of the holder of parental responsibilities. 2026 costs (mainland): normal (5 working days) ~€65, express (2 days) ~€85, urgent (1 day) ~€95. In short: 5 years, with in-person biometrics.
📋 The rules
- Validity: 5 years (adults); 2 years (children <4)
- In-person biometrics required
- Requires a valid Citizen Card
- Minors: presence of the holder of parental responsibilities
- 2026 cost: ~€65 normal, ~€85 express
🔓 Exceptions
- Children under 4: 2-year validity
- 48-page (frequent-traveller) versions: cost more
- Airport Passport Shop: same-day issuance (pricier)
⚠️ Penalties & fines
There's no "fine" — the passport is a right; what's at stake is not being able to travel outside the area where the Citizen Card suffices. The costs (~€65 normal, ~€85 express, ~€95 urgent) are updated yearly. Beware an important myth: the 10-year passport is NOT in force — it was created in a 2024 order (working group), targeted for 2026, but in June 2026 it's still in development, so passports issued today are 5-year. Treat any "Portuguese passports now 10 years" claim as premature/false. Don't confuse it with Brazil's Federal Police passport. To get one: book an appointment, bring your Citizen Card, and go to the Passport Shop/IRN for the biometrics; for a minor, with the holder of parental responsibilities.

❓ Frequently asked
How long is the passport valid?
The Portuguese electronic passport is valid 5 years for adults. For children under 4, validity is 2 years, and up to 5 years for older minors. The so-called 10-year passport was announced but isn't in force yet; those issued today are 5-year.
How much does the passport cost?
In 2026, on the mainland, the normal passport, issued in 5 working days, costs about €65. The express service, in 2 days, is around €85, and the urgent, in 1 day, €95. Same-day issuance at the airport is pricier. The figures are updated every year.
Can I do the passport online?
Not entirely. You can book and start the application, but issuance requires in-person capture of biometric data, such as photo, fingerprints and signature, and presenting a valid Citizen Card. You apply at registries, Citizen's Shops or the Passport Shop.
Does the 10-year passport exist yet?
No. The 10-year passport was created on paper, by a 2024 order, targeting 2026, but in June 2026 it's still in development. So passports issued today remain 5-year. It's premature to claim otherwise.
What's needed for a child's passport?
For a minor's passport, the minor must attend, with their ID document, and the holder of parental responsibilities must be present, with their own document. The parents' authorisation is essential. Biometrics are captured in person, as with adults.
