📅 How long can a phone or internet contract last in Finland, and how do I end it?

The short answer

A fixed-term contract may last at most 24 months, and a fixed-term mobile phone subscription at most 12 months. If it continues automatically after the term, you can cancel it at any time, ending two weeks later (109 §).

Phone and internet contracts often start with a minimum term and then run on. How long that first term may be, and how much notice you give once it is over, depends on the rules in Finland.

📜 The rules in Finland

The details

  • In good time before a fixed term ends, the operator must tell you on a durable medium that the contract will continue, how to cancel it, and advise you on cheaper prices (109 §). (finlex.fi)
  • Check when your fixed-term mobile contract ends: text 'sopimus' to 18321. The service is free for the sender and must work around the clock. (traficom.fi)
  • You can end a fixed-term contract early, with two weeks' notice, if illness, unemployment or similar causes payment difficulties, or if keeping it is otherwise unreasonable. The operator may then charge only for a device you keep, not the remaining term (116 §). (finlex.fi)
  • The operator may not continue your fixed-term contract with a new fixed term unless you make a new written contract, and you must get a contract summary for it too. (kkv.fi)
