🔄 How do I switch my phone or internet provider in Finland?

The short answer

When you switch internet provider, the old and new provider must keep you connected, apart from a break of at most one day, unless that is technically impossible. Your old contract ends once the switch is complete (110 a §).

Switching is mostly paperwork: the network stays where it is, only the company that provides your service changes. Who arranges the switch and how long the service may be down depends on the rules in Finland.

📜 The rules in Finland

The details

  • Mobile: make the new contract and say you want to keep your number. The new operator cancels your old subscription for you; porting usually takes a few days, and you can usually influence the date. (kkv.fi)
  • You can switch even during a fixed term, but you usually have to pay the old subscription's fees until the term ends. Check the end date and the fees before you switch. (kkv.fi)
  • The new operator may bill you only after your number has moved, and only if the porting happens. If your old operator makes a counter-offer before that and you accept it, the porting is cancelled. (kkv.fi)
  • Prepaid: when you switch, the old operator must refund your unused balance if you ask. It may charge for this only if the contract says so, and no more than its actual costs (134 a §). (finlex.fi)

❓ Questions

Will I be without phone or internet when I switch?

There can be a short break on the switching day. Ask both providers for the planned date, and see the rules for Finland on this page.

Can I switch before my contract ends?

Yes, but while the minimum term is still running you may have to pay an exit fee or the remaining monthly charges. Check your contract summary first.

Do I have to cancel the old contract myself?

That depends on the service and the rules in Finland. Ask the new provider and keep written confirmation of the end date.
