My phone or internet price is going up: can I leave my contract in Finland?
Prices in an open-ended contract may rise only on grounds named in the terms, without substantially changing the contract, or after a change in law or an authority decision. You can cancel within three months of the notice, ending two weeks later (114, 116 §).
When a provider changes the price or terms during your contract, you may have the right to leave without a fee. That depends on what your contract already said about price changes and on the rules in Finland.
📜 The rules in Finland
Price rises built into the contract
The law allows a price change in an open-ended contract only on grounds named in the contract terms. In a fixed-term contract the price may not rise to your disadvantage mid-term, except due to a change in the law or an authority decision.
The details
- The operator must tell you at least one month in advance, clearly and in writing or another durable form: the change, its content, its grounds and your right to cancel. The message must not look like marketing. (kkv.fi)
- A fixed-term contract cannot be changed to your disadvantage mid-term, except due to a change in the law or an authority decision. You can then usually cancel early with two weeks' notice, but not if the change comes directly from legislation, such as tax law. (kkv.fi)
- If the price was raised without a legal ground, or you were not told as the law requires, you can demand that the contract continues on the old terms. Tell the operator as soon as possible, in writing. (kkv.fi)
- You can always cancel an open-ended contract, ending two weeks later. If you cancel right after the change notice, the new price will not have time to apply to you. (kkv.fi)
Kilpailu- ja kuluttajavirasto (KKV) – kuluttajaneuvonta
Advice and help in a dispute if your written complaint to the operator brings no result. Phone service usually Monday to Wednesday 10–12 and Thursday 12–14, or use the online form.
Kuluttajariitalautakunta
Gives a free, non-binding recommendation on your dispute with the operator, after you have complained to the operator and contacted KKV's consumer advice.

❓ Questions
Is a price rise linked to inflation allowed?
It can be, if the contract set it out clearly. Whether it gives you a right to leave is in the rules for Finland on this page.
How much warning must the provider give?
Providers usually have to tell you before the change starts. Where the rules in Finland set a notice period, it is on this page.
What if I miss the deadline to leave?
The new price then usually applies. You can still leave at the end of the minimum term, or with notice if the contract already runs on.
