Can I use my own router or modem instead of the provider’s in Finland?
Net neutrality includes your right to use the terminal equipment you choose, such as a phone or modem. The device must be compatible with the technical requirements your operator has published.
Many people prefer their own router. Whether your provider must let you connect it, and which details it must give you to set it up, depends on the rules in Finland.
📜 The rules in Finland
The details
- Finnish law also forbids an operator to stop you connecting a radio or telecom device that meets legal requirements. You must maintain it as the operator instructs, so that it does not endanger network security (246 §). (finlex.fi)
- Traficom: a cable operator cannot limit you to modem models it approved in advance. Requirements arising from the network interface are allowed, and equipment that is objectively part of the operator's network is excluded. (traficom.fi)
- If you end a fixed-term contract early on a legal ground, the operator must remove device locks free of charge at the latest once you have paid the compensation for the device (116 §). (finlex.fi)
- If you think your operator breaks the EU rules, contact it first; if that does not solve it, contact Traficom. (traficom.fi)

❓ Questions
Will the provider still help me if something goes wrong?
Providers usually support the connection itself, not equipment you bought. Keep their device and settings so you can test with them.
Do I still pay for the provider’s router?
Check your contract. If the router is rented, ask whether you can stop paying when you use your own.
Will my own router make my internet faster?
It can improve your Wi‑Fi, but the speed of the line itself stays the same.
