🗳️ Can I vote by proxy?

With conditions
Quick answer

Yes, by giving a proxy to a trusted voter. If you can't go on election day, you can entrust your vote to a proxy holder (another voter). It's done via the Maprocuration service: 100% online if you have a France Identité digital identity and the new ID card (bank-card format), or by applying online then having it validated in person at a police station, gendarmerie or consulate. The proxy votes for you at your polling station. Since 2022, your proxy can be registered in a different town from yours. A proxy holder can in principle hold only one proxy established in France.

📋 The rules

  • Give a proxy to a trusted voter (proxy holder)
  • Done via Maprocuration (online)
  • 100% online with France Identité + bank-card-format ID
  • Otherwise: online application + validation at a police station
  • The proxy votes at your polling station

🔓 Exceptions

  • Proxy holder registered in another town: possible since 2022
  • One proxy holder: one proxy in France (two if one is established abroad)
  • Proxy revocable at any time, possible until the eve of the vote (per deadlines)

⚠️ Penalties & fines

The proxy is a framed right: there's no 'penalty' for using it. But making a false proxy, voting for someone without a valid mandate, or collecting proxies by fraud is an electoral offence, severely punished (fines and prison). Make your application early enough before the vote so your town can register it.

❓ Frequently asked

How do I vote by proxy?

Give a proxy to a trusted voter via Maprocuration: 100% online if you have a France Identité digital identity, or online then validated at a police station, gendarmerie or consulate. The proxy then votes at your polling station.

Must the proxy be from my town?

No, not since 2022. Your proxy can be registered on the electoral lists of a different town from yours. But they'll have to vote for you at your polling station on election day.

How many proxies can a holder have?

In principle one proxy established in France. They can hold two if at least one was established abroad. Beyond that, the extra proxies aren't valid.

When to make your proxy?

As early as possible before the vote, to give your town time to register it. The proxy can be made in advance and stays valid for the chosen duration. It's revocable at any time.

Is the proxy free?

Yes, the process is free. With France Identité it's fully online; otherwise a quick in-person validation at a police station or gendarmerie is needed. No money should be paid to establish a proxy.
