Can I install a charging point for my electric car at home in Iceland?
A home charging point needs a safe installation and often a notification to the grid operator. Tenants and flat owners may need permission, and some countries give a right to install.
📜 The rules in Iceland
Charging an electric car at home
In a multi-owner building, an owner may install EV charging at their own parking space, or a common space belonging to their flat, without the other owners' approval (Act no. 67/2020 amending the Multi-Owner Buildings Act).
- If you may use a shared, undivided car park, the owners' association must meet your request to install charging equipment there. (althingi.is)
- Equipment must measure each owner's electricity use unless clearly unnecessary, and a licensed electrician must do the electrical work. (althingi.is)
🪜 Step by step
- Check your connectionAsk an electrician whether your connection and meter can handle the charger.
- Ask permission where neededTenants ask the landlord and flat owners the owners' association. See below what the rules in Iceland say.

❓ Questions
Can my landlord refuse?
That depends on the rules in Iceland. Where there is a right to install, a refusal usually needs a good reason.
Do I need a bigger connection?
Not always. The electrician and the grid operator can tell you.
Can I charge cheaper at night?
With a time-of-use or dynamic price, charging at off-peak hours can cost less. Ask your supplier.
