Can I carry a knife in Hungary?
The pocket knife passes — the line runs at 8 centimetres and at the spring. Under the decree on devices especially dangerous to public safety, you may carry in public a cutting tool whose blade or stabbing length doesn't exceed 8 centimetres — the classic pocket knife is legal. Two hard exceptions: the switchblade (and similar listed devices: coshes, batons, nunchaku) is banned in public regardless of size; and blades over 8 cm may only travel when tied to a legitimate purpose — work, fishing, hiking, sport — packed and transported accordingly. 'I carry it for self-defence' is not an accepted reason — that's precisely what the ban targets. At public events (festivals, stadiums, demonstrations) the rule hardens: no knives at all. Sanctions: misdemeanour proceedings, fines and confiscation — and a knife surfacing in a crime becomes an aggravating factor.
📋 The key rules
- Carryable in public: knives with at most 8 cm blades
- Switchblades: banned regardless of size (especially dangerous devices)
- Over 8 cm: only for provable legitimate purposes (work, fishing, hiking), packed properly
- Public events (festivals, stadiums, protests): no knives at all
- Carrying 'for self-defence': not a legal reason
🔓 Exceptions
- As work tools (practising a trade) larger knives may be transported — in the work-and-route context
- At home and on private property the decree doesn't restrict — it governs public carrying
⚠️ Penalties
Misdemeanour: fines (up to six figures in HUF) and confiscation; a knife produced at an event is judged more harshly. In crimes, showing or using a knife raises both classification and sentence (armed commission).

❓ Frequently asked questions
Is my Swiss Army knife legal?
Yes — typical pocket knives stay under 8 cm and aren't spring-operated; that combination is carryable in public.
Can I take my filleting knife fishing?
Yes — blades over 8 cm may travel for legitimate purposes (fishing, work, hiking): with the gear, sheathed and bagged, not worn on your belt around town.
Why are switchblades banned even when short?
The decree classifies switchblades as especially dangerous devices per se — banned for the opening mechanism, not the blade length.
Can I bring a pocket knife to a festival?
No — knives can't enter organised public events (festivals, stadiums, protests); security removes them and a misdemeanour case can follow.
