✈️ Travelling outside the EU with a plan from Slovakia: how do I avoid a huge roaming bill?

The short answer

Outside the EU/EEA, Ukraine and Moldova, roaming is not regulated: you usually have to activate it, and each provider sets its own prices in its price list. Prices can be several times higher than at home.

Outside the EU and EEA, roaming can be very expensive, especially mobile data. Protections such as a spending limit and warning messages exist in some places; what applies with a plan from Slovakia is below.

📜 The rules in Slovakia

The details

  • Data roaming outside the EU also has a spending cap, by default close to but not above €50 excluding VAT per monthly billing period. You are alerted at 80%; at the limit, data stops unless you confirm you want to continue. (teleoff.gov.sk)
  • Providers must alert you when data roaming reaches 80% and 100% of the agreed limit; according to RÚ, this limit is usually set at a bill of €61.50 or €123 per monthly billing period. (teleoff.gov.sk)
  • If the foreign network does not allow real-time tracking, you must get a free SMS on arrival saying the spending cap is not available there. (teleoff.gov.sk)
  • RÚ warns about Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the Faroe Islands, northern Cyprus and former Yugoslav countries outside the EU, and about mobile data used when you think you are on Wi-Fi. (teleoff.gov.sk)
  • On ships and planes, providers must protect you from unwanted connections to non-terrestrial networks, for example with a free opt-out. (teleoff.gov.sk)
