🌍 Do I pay extra to use my phone in other EU countries with a plan from Slovakia?

The short answer

In the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, and since 1 January 2026 also in Ukraine and Moldova, you roam like at home: no roaming surcharges as long as your use is reasonable. Regulated roaming should be active on your SIM automatically.

With a plan from an operator in the EU or EEA, calls, texts and data in other EU and EEA countries are generally charged as at home, within fair-use limits. Other rules apply to plans from other countries; what applies with a plan from Slovakia is below.

📜 The rules in Slovakia

The details

  • Beyond fair use, surcharges are capped, VAT included: from 1 January 2026 at most €0.0234 per minute, €0.0037 per SMS and €1.353 per GB; the data cap falls to €1.230 per GB from 1 January 2027. (teleoff.gov.sk)
  • The first time you use data in another member state, you get a free message with your fair-use policy and any surcharges, and another when your fair-use data allowance is used up. (teleoff.gov.sk)
  • Each time you enter another member state, your provider must send a free message that you can call 112 for free, with a link to other ways of reaching emergency services. (teleoff.gov.sk)
  • The United Kingdom and Switzerland are not part of regulated roaming. (teleoff.gov.sk)

🪜 Step by step

  1. Check your plan before you travelSee which countries your plan treats like home and whether it has a separate data allowance abroad.
  2. Read the welcome messageWhen you arrive, your operator usually sends a message with the prices and limits that apply.
  3. Watch the fair-use limitUnlimited or very large data plans can have a smaller allowance abroad. Above it, a surcharge can apply.
  4. Take care on ships, planes and near bordersThere your phone can connect to a network outside the usual roaming rules. Switch off roaming or use flight mode when in doubt.

❓ Questions

What does fair use mean?

Operators may limit roaming at home prices to normal travel, not living abroad for good, and may cap data abroad on very large plans.

Which countries count as home?

That depends on your plan and on where your operator is based. The rules for Slovakia are on this page.

Are calls back home free?

Calls home usually cost the same as at home when roaming at home prices applies. Calls to other countries can cost extra.
