📲 Can I keep my phone number when I switch provider in Slovakia?

The short answer

Keeping your number when you change provider is free. The new provider runs the porting and activates your number within one working day of the agreed date; you may be without service for at most one working day (§ 88 Act 452/2021).

You can usually take your mobile or landline number with you to a new provider. You ask the new provider to transfer it, and the number moves on an agreed day.

📜 The rules in Slovakia

Compensation

For a late porting you get €10 per calendar day, €20 per day after the sixth day; for a number ported against your will €30 per day. Claim late-porting compensation from the new provider; it is paid within 60 days (Decree 431/2022).

The details

  • You can withdraw from the porting contract up to two working days before the agreed porting date. Your old contract ends automatically at the end of the day on which the new provider activates your number. (static.slov-lex.sk)
  • You can still port your number for at least one month after your contract ends, unless you have demonstrably waived this right. (static.slov-lex.sk)
  • A landline number can be ported only within its geographic numbering area; the right does not cover porting between fixed and mobile networks. (static.slov-lex.sk)
  • With prepaid, the old provider must refund your remaining credit on request; a fee is allowed only if your contract says so, and it must match the actual cost. (static.slov-lex.sk)

🪜 Step by step

  1. Do not cancel the old contract firstIf you end the old contract before the transfer, the number can be lost. Let the new provider request the transfer.
  2. Get your details readyYou usually need the number, the name on the old contract and sometimes a customer number or transfer code from the old provider.
  3. Agree the transfer dateThe new provider tells you when the number moves. Keep the old SIM or line in use until then.
  4. Check that everything worksTest calls and messages on the new SIM or line, and check that the old provider sends a final bill and stops charging.

❓ Questions

How long does a number transfer take?

It is usually quick. If the rules in Slovakia set a maximum time or compensation for delays, you find them on this page.

Can I keep my number if I still owe the old provider money?

You still have to pay what you owe under the old contract. Ask the new provider before you switch whether anything could hold up the transfer.

Can I move a mobile number to a landline, or the other way round?

Usually not: mobile numbers move between mobile providers, landline numbers between landline providers.
