How long can a phone or internet contract last in Slovakia, and how do I end it?
When you first sign a contract, the minimum term (doba viazanosti) may not exceed 24 months. After a fixed-term contract renews automatically, you can cancel at any time without penalty, with at most one month's notice (§ 87 Act 452/2021).
Phone and internet contracts often start with a minimum term and then run on. How long that first term may be, and how much notice you give once it is over, depends on the rules in Slovakia.
📜 The rules in Slovakia
The details
- At least six weeks before an automatic renewal, the provider must tell you on a durable medium when the term ends and how to cancel, and give you its best tariffs for your services; it must then send you these at least once a year. (static.slov-lex.sk)
- A contract for an indefinite period can be cancelled at any time, for any reason or none, and the notice period must be the same for you and the provider. (static.slov-lex.sk)
- A provider of internet or phone-number services may not extend your contract term or commitment period because you order an extra service or device from it, unless you explicitly agree (§ 90 Act 452/2021). (static.slov-lex.sk)
- If you leave early with a legal right to withdraw, the provider may only charge for a discounted device you keep, at most its pro-rata value or the remaining fees, whichever is lower, and must unlock it for other networks free. (static.slov-lex.sk)
