🤝 Is there a social tariff or cheaper phone and internet for people on a low income in Slovakia?

The short answer

Slovakia has no social tariff for phone or internet. In November 2023 RÚ decided not to oblige any provider to charge special prices, finding universal service prices affordable even for low-income consumers.

Some countries have a social tariff or other support so that people on a low income can afford a phone and internet connection, and many guarantee a basic connection. What exists in Slovakia is below.

📜 The rules in Slovakia

Who qualifies

No one at present, as no scheme exists. Under the law, special prices could apply to households receiving assistance in material need and to consumers with special social needs, such as severe disability.

The details

  • The law lets RÚ set special maximum prices for households receiving assistance in material need and for people with special social needs, if prices become a barrier; RÚ reviews this every three years (§§ 97–98 Act 452/2021). (static.slov-lex.sk)
  • RÚ also designated no universal service provider for a fixed connection with voice and adequate broadband, finding both available and affordable across Slovakia (notice of 24 November 2023). (teleoff.gov.sk)
  • If you fall behind on payment, service may be suspended only after a proper warning and a reasonable deadline. Until then the provider must offer a restricted service with incoming calls, calls to free numbers and minimum internet. (static.slov-lex.sk)
  • A complaint about a bill does not delay payment, but if the bill is over three times your six-month average, the provider must let you defer the excess or pay it in at least three monthly instalments. (static.slov-lex.sk)
