My phone or internet provider will not solve my complaint: where can I go for free in Hungary?
Complain to your provider in writing first; it must reply in writing within 30 days, giving reasons for a rejection. If unresolved, apply to the conciliation board: hearings are online unless you ask to attend, and cases end within 90 days (extendable by 30).
If your provider does not solve your complaint, an independent body can look at it, usually free of charge for you. You normally have to complain to the provider first; how to file in Hungary is below.
📜 The rules in Hungary
The details
- The board first tries to reach a settlement; its decision is binding if the provider accepted it in advance, or without that if your claim is at most 250,000 Ft; otherwise it makes a recommendation. You can still go to court. (njt.jog.gov.hu)
- If you dispute a bill, the provider must register your complaint and may not terminate for non-payment while examining it. It also may not terminate if you take the disputed amount to a dispute body and keep paying the undisputed fees. (njt.jog.gov.hu)
- You can ask the NMHH to act on a breach of telecom rules within six months of noticing the breach; this procedure has a fee and does not settle your individual claim. (nmhh.hu)
- If your provider has not answered your complaint after 30 days, you can turn to the consumer protection authority. (nmhh.hu)
Békéltető testületek
Free, independent conciliation boards run by the county and Budapest chambers of commerce. They settle consumer disputes about your contract out of court once you have tried and failed to settle directly with the provider.
Média- és hírközlési biztos (NMHH)
Free NMHH commissioner who mediates with your provider when its conduct has harmed you, and possibly many other subscribers, for example on relocation, delayed porting, billing or disconnection without good reason. It cannot fine the provider or order it to act.
Nemzeti Média- és Hírközlési Hatóság (NMHH)
The telecom authority. It acts on breaches of telecom rules once you have complained to the provider first; it can order the provider to comply or fine it, but does not decide your individual claim.

What to do first: First try to settle the dispute directly with your provider. If that fails, you can apply to the conciliation board; since 2024 the boards are regional, and the board for your place of residence is competent unless you ask for another.
Time limit: There is no separate filing deadline, but claims under a phone or internet contract expire one year after the late or faulty performance; the limitation period is suspended while the conciliation procedure runs.
