My phone or internet price is going up: can I leave my contract in Hungary?
The provider must notify you on a durable medium at least 30 days before a unilateral change. You can then terminate within 45 days of the notice, immediately and without consequences, even a fixed-term contract. A fee rise never counts as favourable to you.
When a provider changes the price or terms during your contract, you may have the right to leave without a fee. That depends on what your contract already said about price changes and on the rules in Hungary.
📜 The rules in Hungary
The details
- There is no exit right if the change is purely in your favour, purely administrative without any disadvantage, or expressly based on a change in the law or an official or court decision. The provider must prove that a change is favourable or administrative. (njt.jog.gov.hu)
- Changes to fees, packages, data limits, speeds or coverage never count as favourable, even if they come with improvements. (njt.jog.gov.hu)
- If the provider raises a fee or cuts what the fee includes, the notice must state the new fee or quantity and the amount of the change, separately for each service in a bundle. (njt.jog.gov.hu)
- A new offer from the provider to change your contract counts as accepted only if you accept it expressly and actively; simply using the service or paying is not acceptance, and otherwise the contract stays unchanged. (njt.jog.gov.hu)
Nemzeti Média- és Hírközlési Hatóság (NMHH)
The telecom authority. It acts on breaches of telecom rules once you have complained to the provider first; it can order the provider to comply or fine it, but does not decide your individual claim.
Média- és hírközlési biztos (NMHH)
Free NMHH commissioner who mediates with your provider when its conduct has harmed you, and possibly many other subscribers, for example on relocation, delayed porting, billing or disconnection without good reason. It cannot fine the provider or order it to act.
🪜 Step by step
- Read the notice carefullyNote the date the change starts and any deadline to react. Keep the message.
- Check your contractSee whether the contract already set out this rise, for example a yearly increase linked to inflation.
- Decide whether to stayCompare offers. If you have the right to leave, use it in writing before the deadline.
- Complain if the rules were not followedIf you were not told properly or the rise breaks your contract, complain to the provider and then to the dispute body.

❓ Questions
Is a price rise linked to inflation allowed?
It can be, if the contract set it out clearly. Whether it gives you a right to leave is in the rules for Hungary on this page.
How much warning must the provider give?
Providers usually have to tell you before the change starts. Where the rules in Hungary set a notice period, it is on this page.
What if I miss the deadline to leave?
The new price then usually applies. You can still leave at the end of the minimum term, or with notice if the contract already runs on.
