🔄 How do I switch my phone or internet provider in Hungary?

The short answer

To switch internet provider, apply only to the new provider; it ends your old service on your behalf. You agree the switch date with it, the service may be down for at most one working day, and the old contract ends once the switch succeeds.

Switching is mostly paperwork: the network stays where it is, only the company that provides your service changes. Who arranges the switch and how long the service may be down depends on the rules in Hungary.

📜 The rules in Hungary

The details

  • If the date cannot be fixed at once, for example on another operator's network, the switching agreement must be signed within 5 working days. You can withdraw your switching request until the working day before the switch. (njt.jog.gov.hu)
  • If the switch leaves you without service for more than one working day, the new provider pays 10,000 Ft for each further day (up to 50,000 Ft); if it happens later than agreed, 5,000 Ft per day (up to 25,000 Ft). (njt.jog.gov.hu)
  • The old provider may refuse the switch if you cannot be identified or have a notified bill over 30 days overdue. Unpaid bills and discounts you must repay stay due to the old provider, unless the new one takes them over. (njt.jog.gov.hu)
  • If you were switched without a switching agreement or without your own request, the service must be restored at your old provider without delay, and the new provider may not charge you for its service. (njt.jog.gov.hu)

❓ Questions

Will I be without phone or internet when I switch?

There can be a short break on the switching day. Ask both providers for the planned date, and see the rules for Hungary on this page.

Can I switch before my contract ends?

Yes, but while the minimum term is still running you may have to pay an exit fee or the remaining monthly charges. Check your contract summary first.

Do I have to cancel the old contract myself?

That depends on the service and the rules in Hungary. Ask the new provider and keep written confirmation of the end date.
