🤝 Is there a social tariff or cheaper phone and internet for people on a low income in Liechtenstein?

The short answer

The law sets no standing social tariff for phone or internet. The AK monitors whether broadband and phone service at a fixed location is affordable and, if not for people on low incomes, can require providers to offer special tariffs (VKND Art. 38).

Some countries have a social tariff or other support so that people on a low income can afford a phone and internet connection, and many guarantee a basic connection. What exists in Liechtenstein is below.

📜 The rules in Liechtenstein

Who qualifies

Only if the AK finds prices unaffordable: consumers on low incomes or with special social needs. They then have a right to a contract and keep their number for a reasonable time. Any consumer can ask to limit the line to voice or broadband (VKND Art. 38).

The details

  • When the new law was prepared, the government stated that, given the market situation, no affordability measures for low-income consumers were planned (Report and Motion BuA No. 122/2022). (bua.regierung.li)
  • The existing universal service continues: a VoIP line with a number at a fixed location, printed and electronic directories, 24-hour directory enquiries in German and English, and a relay and transcription service for people with special needs (VKND Art. 99). (gesetze.li)
  • Once a year you can have charged third-party services costing more than 0.20 francs per minute or event blocked free of charge (VKND Art. 24). (gesetze.li)
