📲 Can I keep my phone number when I switch provider in Estonia?

The short answer

You can keep your Estonian phone number when you change operator. Apply to the new operator: with your authorisation it can end your old contract and it handles the port. The whole process is free for you.

You can usually take your mobile or landline number with you to a new provider. You ask the new provider to transfer it, and the number moves on an agreed day.

📜 The rules in Estonia

Compensation

Estonian law sets no fixed compensation amount. Before you sign, the operator must tell you how it pays compensation if number-portability rules are breached, and prepaid users must be told of their right to a refund of remaining credit on request.

The details

  • From 1 November 2026, once you have the new SIM card, a mobile number moves at 3:00 a.m. on the working day after your old operator confirms the port, or on a later working day you agree. You get SMS updates on each stage. (riigiteataja.ee)
  • Until 31 October 2026, after your old operator confirms the number can move, the new operator sets a mobile port period of two to three working days, unless you agree longer. Any port may cut your service for at most 15 minutes. (riigiteataja.ee)
  • Your old operator must keep your number available for porting for at least one month after you cancel, unless you waive this. A number cannot move between landline and mobile, or from a contract where your identity was not verified. (riigiteataja.ee)
  • If a port fails, the new operator must tell you at once and, with your consent, return the number to your old operator, which reactivates it on the previous terms. Port dates are never set on weekends or public holidays. (riigiteataja.ee)

  3. Agree the transfer dateThe new provider tells you when the number moves. Keep the old SIM or line in use until then.
  4. Check that everything worksTest calls and messages on the new SIM or line, and check that the old provider sends a final bill and stops charging.

❓ Questions

How long does a number transfer take?

It is usually quick. If the rules in Estonia set a maximum time or compensation for delays, you find them on this page.

Can I keep my number if I still owe the old provider money?

You still have to pay what you owe under the old contract. Ask the new provider before you switch whether anything could hold up the transfer.

Can I move a mobile number to a landline, or the other way round?

Usually not: mobile numbers move between mobile providers, landline numbers between landline providers.
