🔄 How do I switch my phone or internet provider in Estonia?

The short answer

To switch internet provider, apply to the new provider, which organises the switch. It must check within five working days whether the switch is technically possible and agree a switch date within 30 working days of your application, unless you agree a later date.

Switching is mostly paperwork: the network stays where it is, only the company that provides your service changes. Who arranges the switch and how long the service may be down depends on the rules in Estonia.

📜 The rules in Estonia

The details

  • Your old provider keeps serving you on the same terms until the switch date. The switch must be seamless; if that is technically impossible, the break may last at most one working day. Your old contracts end automatically on the agreed date. (riigiteataja.ee)
  • If the switch is not technically possible, the new provider must explain this to you within the same five working days. (riigiteataja.ee)
  • You may cancel a communications contract at any time; cancellation takes effect from the working day after the operator receives your notice. Ending a fixed-term contract early can cost a contractual penalty, so check your terms before switching. (ttja.ee)
  • Before you sign, the operator must tell you the costs and period of switching provider, and the compensation and refund rules that apply if the switch is delayed. (riigiteataja.ee)

❓ Questions

Will I be without phone or internet when I switch?

There can be a short break on the switching day. Ask both providers for the planned date, and see the rules for Estonia on this page.

Can I switch before my contract ends?

Yes, but while the minimum term is still running you may have to pay an exit fee or the remaining monthly charges. Check your contract summary first.

Do I have to cancel the old contract myself?

That depends on the service and the rules in Estonia. Ask the new provider and keep written confirmation of the end date.
