📅 How long can a phone or internet contract last in Estonia, and how do I end it?

The short answer

A fixed-term phone or internet contract may last at most two years, and the operator must tell you that a contract of at most one year is available. You can cancel at any time; it ends the working day after the operator receives your notice.

Phone and internet contracts often start with a minimum term and then run on. How long that first term may be, and how much notice you give once it is over, depends on the rules in Estonia.

📜 The rules in Estonia

The details

  • TTJA warns that ending a fixed-term contract early can cost a contractual penalty or handling fee, so find out the amount before you sign. (ttja.ee)
  • Where a law entitles you to end the contract before the agreed term, the operator may only claim compensation for a device you keep: no more than its residual value or the remaining instalments, whichever is lower. (riigiteataja.ee)
  • Before automatic renewal, the operator must tell you clearly and in good time, on a durable medium, that your commitment is ending and that you can cancel at no extra cost. It must also advise you on its best price at least once a year. (riigiteataja.ee)
  • Ordering an extra service or a device from your internet or phone provider does not extend your contract unless you agree. The two-year limit does not apply to a separate instalment plan only for building your physical connection. (riigiteataja.ee)

❓ Questions

Can I leave during the minimum term?

Usually only by paying an exit fee or the remaining charges. Some situations, such as a change to your contract terms, can give you the right to leave earlier.

Does my contract renew automatically?

Many contracts run on after the minimum term. Whether the provider must remind you first, and how you can end it then, is in the rules for Estonia on this page.

Does a phone bought with the contract change anything?

A phone or other equipment bought with the contract can come with its own payments. Check whether they continue if you end the service.
