📈 My phone or internet price is going up: can I leave my contract in Estonia?

The short answer

The operator must announce a contract change, such as a price rise, at least one month ahead on a durable medium, in a notice titled "Lepingu muutmine". If you disagree, you can cancel without extra cost within one month of receiving the notice.

When a provider changes the price or terms during your contract, you may have the right to leave without a fee. That depends on what your contract already said about price changes and on the rules in Estonia.

📜 The rules in Estonia

Price rises built into the contract

The Electronic Communications Act contains no separate rule on index-linked price rises. The general rules apply: one month's notice with the right to leave, and no price change to your detriment during a fixed term unless a law or a government authority decision requires it.

The details

  • During a fixed term, the operator may not change the price or main features of the service to your detriment, unless a change in the law or a decision of a government authority requires it. (riigiteataja.ee)
  • The notice must list the changed terms, the reason and legal basis, and your right to cancel. Extra costs on cancellation are allowed only if the change benefits you, is purely administrative with no negative effect, or is required by law. (riigiteataja.ee)
  • TTJA stresses that if you cancel because you do not accept the new terms, the provider may not charge you a contractual penalty. (ttja.ee)
  • For prepaid cards, the operator gives notice by text message to the card number and on its website; the message must link directly to the details of the change. (riigiteataja.ee)

  3. Decide whether to stayCompare offers. If you have the right to leave, use it in writing before the deadline.

❓ Questions

Is a price rise linked to inflation allowed?

It can be, if the contract set it out clearly. Whether it gives you a right to leave is in the rules for Estonia on this page.

How much warning must the provider give?

Providers usually have to tell you before the change starts. Where the rules in Estonia set a notice period, it is on this page.

What if I miss the deadline to leave?

The new price then usually applies. You can still leave at the end of the minimum term, or with notice if the contract already runs on.
