Can I keep my phone number when I switch provider in Romania?
You can keep your phone number when you change provider, free of charge. Apply to the new provider; porting normally takes at most 3 working days, or happens on a later date you choose, within 25 days of applying.
You can usually take your mobile or landline number with you to a new provider. You ask the new provider to transfer it, and the number moves on an agreed day.
📜 The rules in Romania
Compensation
You have a right to compensation for porting delays, missed activation appointments and porting without your consent. Your contract must explain this right and how to claim it.
The details
- You can port your number even before your contract ends, and the request cannot be refused for that reason. The old contract ends when porting is complete, but you still owe any debts and early-termination penalties. (portabilitate.ro)
- To cancel porting, file a cancellation request with the provider where you asked for porting, at the latest 24 hours before the agreed porting date. ANCOM does not cancel portings, so go to the provider first. (infocentru.ancom.ro)
- Under EU rules, after your contract ends you keep the right to port your number to another provider for at least one month, unless you give up that right. (eur-lex.europa.eu)
- On porting day your phone service is unavailable for at most 3 hours for mobile and at most 4 hours for fixed numbers. (portabilitate.ro)
- You do not have to accept a temporary number. If porting fails, the contract for that number ends automatically unless, within 30 days, you expressly agree to keep it. (portabilitate.ro)
Autoritatea Națională pentru Administrare și Reglementare în Comunicații (ANCOM) – portabilitate.ro
ANCOM's porting site: steps, request and cancellation forms, and a search showing which network a number is in. ANCOM's free line answers porting questions.
Autoritatea Națională pentru Administrare și Reglementare în Comunicații (ANCOM)
Telecom regulator. Takes written complaints when a provider breaks telecom rules (contract summary, notice of changes, porting, roaming, information duties); it cannot enforce your individual contract.
🪜 Step by step
- Do not cancel the old contract firstIf you end the old contract before the transfer, the number can be lost. Let the new provider request the transfer.
- Get your details readyYou usually need the number, the name on the old contract and sometimes a customer number or transfer code from the old provider.
- Agree the transfer dateThe new provider tells you when the number moves. Keep the old SIM or line in use until then.
- Check that everything worksTest calls and messages on the new SIM or line, and check that the old provider sends a final bill and stops charging.

❓ Questions
How long does a number transfer take?
It is usually quick. If the rules in Romania set a maximum time or compensation for delays, you find them on this page.
Can I keep my number if I still owe the old provider money?
You still have to pay what you owe under the old contract. Ask the new provider before you switch whether anything could hold up the transfer.
Can I move a mobile number to a landline, or the other way round?
Usually not: mobile numbers move between mobile providers, landline numbers between landline providers.
