How long can a phone or internet contract last in Romania, and how do I end it?
A phone or internet contract may have a single initial period of at most 24 months. After it, the contract usually renews automatically, and you can then end it at any time with at most 30 days' notice, paying only for that period.
Phone and internet contracts often start with a minimum term and then run on. How long that first term may be, and how much notice you give once it is over, depends on the rules in Romania.
📜 The rules in Romania
The details
- Before the initial period ends, the provider must tell you in good time, on a durable medium, that it is ending, how to cancel and its best tariffs; during automatic renewal it repeats the best-tariff information at least once a year. (infocentru.ancom.ro)
- Adding services or a subsidised device can extend the initial period only with your consent, and only by the difference: 22 months into a 24-month contract, a new 24-month deal can extend it by at most 22 months. (infocentru.ancom.ro)
- Early-termination penalties must be proportionate to the benefits you received. If a fixed penalty looks excessive compared with the provider's possible loss, you can complain to ANPC. (infocentru.ancom.ro)
- There is no cooling-off period for a contract signed in the provider's shop: you cannot withdraw from it without penalties, even the next day. (infocentru.ancom.ro)
- Cancel in writing, by registered post with acknowledgement of receipt or at a shop where you get a registration number, so you can prove the date. (infocentru.ancom.ro)
Autoritatea Națională pentru Administrare și Reglementare în Comunicații (ANCOM)
Telecom regulator. Takes written complaints when a provider breaks telecom rules (contract summary, notice of changes, porting, roaming, information duties); it cannot enforce your individual contract.
Autoritatea Națională pentru Protecția Consumatorilor (ANPC)
Consumer protection authority. ANCOM sends consumers here when a provider does not respect the contract, for example repair times, compensation or excessive early-termination penalties.

Usually only by paying an exit fee or the remaining charges. Some situations, such as a change to your contract terms, can give you the right to leave earlier.
Does my contract renew automatically?
Many contracts run on after the minimum term. Whether the provider must remind you first, and how you can end it then, is in the rules for Romania on this page.
Does a phone bought with the contract change anything?
A phone or other equipment bought with the contract can come with its own payments. Check whether they continue if you end the service.
