How do I switch my phone or internet provider in Romania?
When you switch internet provider, the new provider runs the switch and must activate your service as soon as possible on the date agreed with you. Your old provider keeps serving you until then, and the interruption may not exceed one working day.
Switching is mostly paperwork: the network stays where it is, only the company that provides your service changes. Who arranges the switch and how long the service may be down depends on the rules in Romania.
📜 The rules in Romania
The details
- Under EU rules nobody may switch you or port your number without your explicit consent, and your contract with the old provider ends automatically once the switch is complete. (eur-lex.europa.eu)
- Your contract must tell you about your right to compensation for delays or abuse when you switch or port, and for missed installation or service appointments, and how to claim it. (infocentru.ancom.ro)
- Changing provider does not cancel what you owe the old one: if the initial period (at most 24 months) has not ended, early-termination penalties can still apply. Check your contract before you switch. (infocentru.ancom.ro)
- Compare public phone and internet offers on Veritel.ro, the comparison tool run by ANCOM, before choosing a new provider. (veritel.ro)
Autoritatea Națională pentru Administrare și Reglementare în Comunicații (ANCOM)
Telecom regulator. Takes written complaints when a provider breaks telecom rules (contract summary, notice of changes, porting, roaming, information duties); it cannot enforce your individual contract.
Autoritatea Națională pentru Protecția Consumatorilor (ANPC) – Direcția Soluționarea Alternativă a Litigiilor (SAL)
Free, voluntary out-of-court procedure for disputes between consumers and traders, including phone and internet providers, once you have first tried to settle with the provider.
🪜 Step by step
- Check your current contractFind the end of the minimum term, the notice period and any exit fee. They are in your contract summary or online account.
- Compare offersLook at the total cost over the whole term: set-up fees, equipment, and the price after any discount period ends.
- Sign with the new providerSay whether you want to keep your number. Ask the new provider whether it arranges the switch and the end of your old contract.
- Return equipment and check the final billSend back rented equipment if you are asked to, keep proof of it, and check that the old provider stops charging you.

❓ Questions
Will I be without phone or internet when I switch?
There can be a short break on the switching day. Ask both providers for the planned date, and see the rules for Romania on this page.
Can I switch before my contract ends?
Yes, but while the minimum term is still running you may have to pay an exit fee or the remaining monthly charges. Check your contract summary first.
Do I have to cancel the old contract myself?
That depends on the service and the rules in Romania. Ask the new provider and keep written confirmation of the end date.
