How long can a phone or internet contract last in Spain, and how do I end it?
A consumer contract may last at most 24 months. When it ends it renews automatically for the same period, but after that renewal you can cancel at any time with at most one month's notice, paying only for the service during the notice (art. 67.7 Ley 11/2022).
Phone and internet contracts often start with a minimum term and then run on. How long that first term may be, and how much notice you give once it is over, depends on the rules in Spain.
📜 The rules in Spain
The details
- Before the automatic renewal, the operator must tell you clearly, on a durable medium, that your commitment is ending and how to cancel, and give you its best tariffs. It must inform you of its best tariffs at least once a year. (boe.es)
- Adding services or devices from the same operator does not extend your original term, unless you expressly agree to that when you sign up for them (art. 71.3). (boe.es)
- If you leave before a minimum-stay commitment (permanencia) ends, the penalty must be proportional to the days of the commitment you did not complete. (boe.es)
- If you cancel by phone, ask for the reference number at once and for a document, by post or email, proving your request. If you cancel by post, send it with acknowledgement of receipt. (usuariosteleco.digital.gob.es)
Oficina de Atención al Usuario de Telecomunicaciones
If your cancellation is not carried out as the rules require, you can complain to the Oficina.

Many contracts run on after the minimum term. Whether the provider must remind you first, and how you can end it then, is in the rules for Spain on this page.
Does a phone bought with the contract change anything?
A phone or other equipment bought with the contract can come with its own payments. Check whether they continue if you end the service.
