Can I use my own router or modem instead of the provider’s in Italy?
In Italy you can use your own modem or router: providers may not refuse to connect a device you chose that meets national and EU requirements, nor charge extra, delay or degrade your service because of it.
Many people prefer their own router. Whether your provider must let you connect it, and which details it must give you to set it up, depends on the rules in Italy.
📜 The rules in Italy
The details
- The provider must give you, at no extra cost, the settings and parameters needed to configure your own device, or a self-configuration service. (agcom.it)
- On fibre to the home (FTTH) the provider may restrict the choice of the optical terminal (ONT) only if it is not built into the router; an external ONT you request must be installed within 5 working days. (agcom.it)
- On fixed wireless access (FWA), only the radio unit supplied by the provider may be imposed, with transparent and proportionate costs. (agcom.it)
- If the provider supplies the modem for a fee, it must tell you the costs, such as installation, rental instalments and buy-out terms. (agcom.it)

❓ Questions
Will the provider still help me if something goes wrong?
Providers usually support the connection itself, not equipment you bought. Keep their device and settings so you can test with them.
Do I still pay for the provider’s router?
Check your contract. If the router is rented, ask whether you can stop paying when you use your own.
Will my own router make my internet faster?
It can improve your Wi‑Fi, but the speed of the line itself stays the same.
