🔄 How do I switch my phone or internet provider in Italy?

The short answer

In Italy the new provider runs the switch: you sign up with it and your old contract ends automatically once the transfer is complete. The interruption of service during the switch may not exceed one working day.

Switching is mostly paperwork: the network stays where it is, only the company that provides your service changes. Who arranges the switch and how long the service may be down depends on the rules in Italy.

📜 The rules in Italy

The details

  • Give the new provider your migration code (codice di migrazione utente, CMU). It is printed on your bill, and your current provider's customer service can also give it to you. (agcom.it)
  • Until the new provider activates its service, the old one must keep your phone and internet running on the same economic and technical terms. (agcom.it)
  • Closing or transferring your line may cost at most the average monthly fee you paid, or the provider's actual costs if lower (AGCOM guidelines 487/18/CONS). (agcom.it)
  • If the switch is late, AGCOM's compensation rules set 1.50 euro for each day of delay, paid by the provider responsible. (agcom.it)

❓ Questions

Will I be without phone or internet when I switch?

There can be a short break on the switching day. Ask both providers for the planned date, and see the rules for Italy on this page.

Can I switch before my contract ends?

Yes, but while the minimum term is still running you may have to pay an exit fee or the remaining monthly charges. Check your contract summary first.

Do I have to cancel the old contract myself?

That depends on the service and the rules in Italy. Ask the new provider and keep written confirmation of the end date.
