📅 How long can a phone or internet contract last in Italy, and how do I end it?

The short answer

A phone or internet contract may bind you for at most 24 months, and every provider must offer at least one contract with an initial term of no more than 12 months.

Phone and internet contracts often start with a minimum term and then run on. How long that first term may be, and how much notice you give once it is over, depends on the rules in Italy.

📜 The rules in Italy

The details

  • After an automatic renewal you can leave at any time with at most one month's notice, without penalty or deactivation costs. The provider must warn you at least two months before the renewal. (normattiva.it)
  • Italian law also lets you withdraw or move your line to another provider at any time, with no more than 30 days' notice and without charges not justified by the provider's costs. You can cancel online too. (normattiva.it)
  • Exit costs may not exceed the average monthly fee you paid, or the provider's actual costs if lower; any refund of discounts must be fair and proportionate to the remaining promotion. (agcom.it)
  • If you bought a phone or modem in instalments, by default you keep paying the remaining instalments after leaving; you can ask to pay them all at once at no extra cost. (agcom.it)

❓ Questions

Can I leave during the minimum term?

Usually only by paying an exit fee or the remaining charges. Some situations, such as a change to your contract terms, can give you the right to leave earlier.

Does my contract renew automatically?

Many contracts run on after the minimum term. Whether the provider must remind you first, and how you can end it then, is in the rules for Italy on this page.

Does a phone bought with the contract change anything?

A phone or other equipment bought with the contract can come with its own payments. Check whether they continue if you end the service.
