📡 Can I use my own router or modem instead of the provider’s in Luxembourg?

The short answer

EU open-internet rules let you use terminal equipment of your choice through your internet access. The ILR states that you may choose your own router or modem, as long as it is compatible with your internet provider's technical specifications.

Many people prefer their own router. Whether your provider must let you connect it, and which details it must give you to set it up, depends on the rules in Luxembourg.

📜 The rules in Luxembourg

The details

  • Regulation (EU) 2015/2120 gives every end-user the right to use terminal equipment of their choice via their internet access service. (publications.europa.eu)
  • Your provider must tell you any conditions, including fees, for using the equipment it supplies, and publish any restriction on its use. (myilr.lu)
  • If you cancel early under a legal right and keep subsidised equipment, the fee is capped, and the provider must remove any lock to other networks free of charge, at the latest when you pay it. (data.legilux.public.lu)

❓ Questions

Will the provider still help me if something goes wrong?

Providers usually support the connection itself, not equipment you bought. Keep their device and settings so you can test with them.

Do I still pay for the provider’s router?

Check your contract. If the router is rented, ask whether you can stop paying when you use your own.

Will my own router make my internet faster?

It can improve your Wi‑Fi, but the speed of the line itself stays the same.
