How do I switch electricity or gas supplier in Estonia?
Your supply does not stop when you switch: the cables, pipes and meter stay the same. Only the company that sends the bill changes.
📜 The rules in Estonia
Switching supplier
Switching is free: sellers may not charge households a switching fee. The new seller registers the contract at least 14 days before it starts, so a switch takes about two weeks. Only fixed-term contracts may carry a proportionate early-exit fee.
The market
The electricity market has been fully open since 2013: anyone with a network contract can choose their electricity seller. Household gas contracts can also be compared and changed. Your network operator stays the same.
Cooling-off period
For contracts made by phone, at your door or elsewhere off-premises you can withdraw within 14 days without giving a reason. A phone deal binds you only after you confirm it in writing.
🪜 Step by step
- Get your details readyTake your latest bill: meter point number, yearly use, and the end date and notice period of your contract.
- Compare offersUse the price comparison below and look at the total yearly cost, not only the price per kWh. Check how long the price is fixed.
- Sign with the new supplierIn most countries the new supplier arranges the switch, including notice to the old one. Keep the confirmation.
- Check the final billRead your meter on the switch date and compare it with the old supplier’s final bill. Any credit must be paid back.
