The regulation itself sets no time limit; the Court left that to national law (Moré, C-139/11). So how far back you can claim depends on the country whose courts apply — and it varies widely, from 1 year to 6 or more.
The practical rule: claim as early as you can, and keep your booking and boarding passes. The per-country pages list each limitation period.
