Can I build a bathing jetty in Denmark?
Only with permission — the jetty stands on the state's sea territory. A bathing or boat jetty needs municipal permission (open pile jetties at your own shore) — and in special cases the Coastal Directorate. Only the owner of land running to the water can apply, and conditions follow: open pile construction, free water flow, no obstruction of passage along the coast, seasonal removal and maintenance duties. Then the detail that surprises owners: because the jetty stands on sea territory, the public may generally walk on and bathe from it — you own the jetty, not exclusive rights to the water around it.
📋 The rules
- Bathing/boat jetty: municipal permission (Coastal Directorate in some cases)
- Only waterfront landowners may apply
- Conditions: open piles, free passage and water flow
- The jetty stands on sea territory — the public may use it
- Maintenance and removal duties follow the permit
🔓 Exceptions
- Shared jetties (owner associations, bathing clubs): same permit, shared duties
- Existing legal jetties: continued use per conditions; rebuilding needs a new permit
⚠️ Penalties & fines
A jetty without permission: removal orders at your expense plus fines under the Coastal Protection Act. Blocking public passage along the beach: also illegal.

❓ Frequently asked
Where do I apply?
The municipality for ordinary open bathing jetties at your own shore; the Coastal Directorate for special structures and locations.
May strangers bathe from my private jetty?
Generally yes — the jetty stands on state sea territory where the public may move; no sign changes that.
Must the jetty come up in winter?
Many permits require seasonal removal (typically 1 November–1 April) — your permit states the conditions.
The neighbour built without permission. Now what?
Report to the municipality — illegal jetties get removal orders at the owner's expense.
