Can I keep my phone number when I switch provider in Norway?
You can keep your number. Order the new subscription and give your number; the new provider gets your written consent (SMS or e-mail is enough), moves the number and ends the old subscription. Nkom advises you not to cancel the old one yourself first.
You can usually take your mobile or landline number with you to a new provider. You ask the new provider to transfer it, and the number moves on an agreed day.
📜 The rules in Norway
Compensation
Your provider must compensate you if porting is delayed more than one working day beyond the agreed time, for misuse, and for cancelled service or installation appointments (ekomforskriften § 4-10). No amount is set; you must be told about this right when you sign.
The details
- You agree the date with the new provider. The number must be active within one working day of that date, and loss of service during porting may not exceed one working day (ekomforskriften § 4-8). (lovdata.no)
- Your old provider may not block or delay porting because you owe it money, and you may not be billed separately for porting (ekomforskriften §§ 4-7 and 4-9). (lovdata.no)
- If you have already cancelled your subscription, you keep the right to port the number to another provider for at least one month afterwards, unless you gave up that right (ekomforskriften § 4-7). (lovdata.no)
- If you paid in advance, the old provider must refund the remaining credit on request. It may charge a fee for the refund only if your contract says so (ekomloven § 4-17). (lovdata.no)
Nasjonal kommunikasjonsmyndighet (Nkom)
Supervises the porting rules. Disputes about the written consent needed for porting are public-law matters, which BKN does not handle.
Brukerklagenemnda for elektronisk kommunikasjon (BKN)
Neutral, independent board for disputes between private customers and providers of phone, internet and TV services. Your complaint must first go to the provider.
🪜 Step by step
- Do not cancel the old contract firstIf you end the old contract before the transfer, the number can be lost. Let the new provider request the transfer.
- Get your details readyYou usually need the number, the name on the old contract and sometimes a customer number or transfer code from the old provider.
- Agree the transfer dateThe new provider tells you when the number moves. Keep the old SIM or line in use until then.
- Check that everything worksTest calls and messages on the new SIM or line, and check that the old provider sends a final bill and stops charging.

❓ Questions
How long does a number transfer take?
It is usually quick. If the rules in Norway set a maximum time or compensation for delays, you find them on this page.
Can I keep my number if I still owe the old provider money?
You still have to pay what you owe under the old contract. Ask the new provider before you switch whether anything could hold up the transfer.
Can I move a mobile number to a landline, or the other way round?
Usually not: mobile numbers move between mobile providers, landline numbers between landline providers.
