My phone or internet price is going up: can I leave my contract in Norway?
Your provider must notify you at least one month before changing your contract terms and tell you about your right to leave. If you do not accept the change, you can end the contract at no extra cost within three months (ekomloven § 4-6).
When a provider changes the price or terms during your contract, you may have the right to leave without a fee. That depends on what your contract already said about price changes and on the rules in Norway.
📜 The rules in Norway
Price rises built into the contract
No official Norwegian page deals with index-linked price clauses separately. Nkom says the duty to notify covers every change the provider makes to your contract.
The details
- During a binding period you may leave only if the change is negative for you, for example a higher price. Changes that only benefit you, are purely administrative or are required by law do not give this right. (lovdata.no)
- If you leave, the provider can still ask you to pay the rest of the agreed price for a subsidised phone or other device you keep. (lovdata.no)
- The notice must be in writing, for example by e-mail, SMS, on the bill or on your account page, and must explain the change clearly enough for you to understand it. (nkom.no)
Nasjonal kommunikasjonsmyndighet (Nkom)
Norway's telecom regulator. It administers and supervises the rules for providers, but as a rule it cannot step in on a dispute about your bill; that goes to your provider and then to Brukerklagenemnda.
Brukerklagenemnda for elektronisk kommunikasjon (BKN)
Neutral, independent board for disputes between private customers and providers of phone, internet and TV services. Your complaint must first go to the provider.

- Check your contractSee whether the contract already set out this rise, for example a yearly increase linked to inflation.
- Decide whether to stayCompare offers. If you have the right to leave, use it in writing before the deadline.
- Complain if the rules were not followedIf you were not told properly or the rise breaks your contract, complain to the provider and then to the dispute body.

❓ Questions
Is a price rise linked to inflation allowed?
It can be, if the contract set it out clearly. Whether it gives you a right to leave is in the rules for Norway on this page.
How much warning must the provider give?
Providers usually have to tell you before the change starts. Where the rules in Norway set a notice period, it is on this page.
What if I miss the deadline to leave?
The new price then usually applies. You can still leave at the end of the minimum term, or with notice if the contract already runs on.
