How long can a phone or internet contract last in Norway, and how do I end it?
As a private customer you can be bound for at most 12 months. A longer binding period, up to 24 months, is allowed only in special cases and, says Nkom, not for private persons. Binding requires that the provider gives you an economic benefit.
Phone and internet contracts often start with a minimum term and then run on. How long that first term may be, and how much notice you give once it is over, depends on the rules in Norway.
📜 The rules in Norway
The details
- Outside the binding period you can end the subscription at any time. Your contract terms set the notice period and the size of any break fee. (nkom.no)
- When the binding period ends, the provider must give you the code to unlock a locked phone free of charge (ekomloven § 4-6). (lovdata.no)
- In a bundle, adding another service or equipment may not extend your binding period unless you expressly agree (ekomloven § 4-12). (lovdata.no)
- Connection costs for a very high capacity network can be paid in instalments under a separate agreement that runs longer than 12 months (ekomloven § 4-6). (lovdata.no)
Nasjonal kommunikasjonsmyndighet (Nkom)
Norway's telecom regulator. It administers and supervises the rules for providers, but as a rule it cannot step in on a dispute about your bill; that goes to your provider and then to Brukerklagenemnda.
Brukerklagenemnda for elektronisk kommunikasjon (BKN)
Neutral, independent board for disputes between private customers and providers of phone, internet and TV services. Your complaint must first go to the provider.

Does a phone bought with the contract change anything?
A phone or other equipment bought with the contract can come with its own payments. Check whether they continue if you end the service.
