How do I switch my phone or internet provider in Norway?
To switch, you only contact the new provider; it leads the switch. For broadband the old provider must keep supplying you until the new service is active, and any break may last at most one working day (ekomloven § 4-14).
Switching is mostly paperwork: the network stays where it is, only the company that provides your service changes. Who arranges the switch and how long the service may be down depends on the rules in Norway.
📜 The rules in Norway
The details
- Your old provider may not try to win you back during the switch or for 14 days after it, and its information to you must be neutral. (nkom.no)
- If you are still in a binding period, the old provider can charge a break fee. Its size normally depends on how much of the period is left and how much you saved with the binding. (nkom.no)
- When you end a broadband contract, the provider must on request forward your e-mail or keep your mailbox open free of charge. It may limit this to three months (ekomloven § 4-13). (lovdata.no)
- Nkom gives a yearly approval mark to free price comparison services for mobile subscriptions that meet its requirements, and checks them regularly. An approved service for fixed broadband is being planned. (nkom.no)
Nasjonal kommunikasjonsmyndighet (Nkom)
Norway's telecom regulator. It administers and supervises the rules for providers, but as a rule it cannot step in on a dispute about your bill; that goes to your provider and then to Brukerklagenemnda.
Brukerklagenemnda for elektronisk kommunikasjon (BKN)
Neutral, independent board for disputes between private customers and providers of phone, internet and TV services. Your complaint must first go to the provider.

❓ Questions
Will I be without phone or internet when I switch?
There can be a short break on the switching day. Ask both providers for the planned date, and see the rules for Norway on this page.
Can I switch before my contract ends?
Yes, but while the minimum term is still running you may have to pay an exit fee or the remaining monthly charges. Check your contract summary first.
Do I have to cancel the old contract myself?
That depends on the service and the rules in Norway. Ask the new provider and keep written confirmation of the end date.
