🗓️ Estimated bills and back-billing in Finland: how far back can my supplier charge me?

The short answer

If your meter was not read for a long time, a large catch-up bill can follow. Many countries limit how far back a supplier may charge and set rules for meter readings.

📜 The rules in Finland

Back-billing and estimated bills

Electricity must be billed on actual consumption at least four times a year; an estimate may be used only if meter data is not available. An incorrect or late bill counts as a defect, giving you a right to a price reduction and damages.

  • Meters that do not record hourly must be read at least four times a year. If you do not send a reading when asked, the network company may estimate it from your earlier use. (energiavirasto.fi)
