📈 My phone or internet price is going up: can I leave my contract in Iceland?

The short answer

When your provider announces a change to your contract terms that is not to your benefit, such as a higher price, you can cancel at once without paying compensation. It must give you at least one month's notice and tell you about this right.

When a provider changes the price or terms during your contract, you may have the right to leave without a fee. That depends on what your contract already said about price changes and on the rules in Iceland.

📜 The rules in Iceland

Price rises built into the contract

Neither the Act nor Fjarskiptastofa's pages say whether a rise under an index clause already in your contract counts as a change of terms. Ask your provider in writing and, if needed, Fjarskiptastofa.

The details

  • Providers must publish their terms and price lists for all their services on their websites. (island.is)
  • If you pay by time or data used, the provider must let you track and control your use and warn you before your included allowance runs out. (island.is)

Fjarskiptastofa

Iceland's telecom regulator. It takes complaints from consumers who think a provider breaks its duties under the telecom rules, tries to settle the dispute quickly and otherwise decides it.

❓ Questions

Is a price rise linked to inflation allowed?

It can be, if the contract set it out clearly. Whether it gives you a right to leave is in the rules for Iceland on this page.

How much warning must the provider give?

Providers usually have to tell you before the change starts. Where the rules in Iceland set a notice period, it is on this page.

What if I miss the deadline to leave?

The new price then usually applies. You can still leave at the end of the minimum term, or with notice if the contract already runs on.
