Can I use my own router or modem instead of the provider’s in Slovakia?
Under the EU Open Internet Regulation you have the right to use terminal equipment of your choice with your internet access service. RÚ supervises compliance with net neutrality in Slovakia.
Many people prefer their own router. Whether your provider must let you connect it, and which details it must give you to set it up, depends on the rules in Slovakia.
📜 The rules in Slovakia
The details
- Providers must send RÚ the technical specifications of the network interfaces to which terminal equipment connects at least 15 days before putting them into service, and RÚ publishes them. (static.slov-lex.sk)
- An instalment contract that only pays for building your physical connection may run beyond 24 months, but it may not cover a phone, router or modem. (static.slov-lex.sk)
- If you switch internet provider and a new device is needed, the new provider or network operator delivers and activates it; if possible, it can be set up remotely. (static.slov-lex.sk)
- RÚ's dispute resolution covers services, not goods such as mobile phones or modems. (teleoff.gov.sk)
Úrad pre reguláciu elektronických komunikácií a poštových služieb (RÚ)
Slovakia's regulator for phone, internet and post. It supervises providers, runs the official price comparator and the certified Merač Internetu speed test.

❓ Questions
Will the provider still help me if something goes wrong?
Providers usually support the connection itself, not equipment you bought. Keep their device and settings so you can test with them.
Do I still pay for the provider’s router?
Check your contract. If the router is rented, ask whether you can stop paying when you use your own.
Will my own router make my internet faster?
It can improve your Wi‑Fi, but the speed of the line itself stays the same.
