Travelling outside the EU with a plan from Hungary: how do I avoid a huge roaming bill?
Outside the EU roaming zone, for example in Switzerland, Turkey, the United Kingdom, Serbia or Bosnia and Herzegovina, the home-price rules do not apply: your provider sets the prices, which can be much higher. Check the tariffs and whether roaming is active before you go.
Outside the EU and EEA, roaming can be very expensive, especially mobile data. Protections such as a spending limit and warning messages exist in some places; what applies with a plan from Hungary is below.
📜 The rules in Hungary
The details
- The data spending cap also applies outside the EU: by default about 50 euros a month without VAT, with a warning at 80%, and data stops at the limit unless you ask to continue. Where real-time tracking is impossible, a free SMS tells you so. (publications.europa.eu)
- Near non-EU borders, for example on the Croatian coast, your phone can switch to a Serbian or Bosnian network by itself. Set manual network selection and turn off data roaming, because apps use data in the background. (nmhh.hu)
- Providers may offer optional roaming packages that include non-EU countries at EU prices, but you only get such a package if you choose it. (nmhh.hu)
Nemzeti Média- és Hírközlési Hatóság (NMHH)
The telecom authority. It acts on breaches of telecom rules once you have complained to the provider first; it can order the provider to comply or fine it, but does not decide your individual claim.

❓ Questions

Where a limit applies, data stops or you are asked whether you want to continue. You decide whether to go on.
Do ships and planes count as abroad?
Networks on ships and planes often run via satellite, are not covered by the usual roaming rules and can be very expensive.
Can I dispute a huge roaming bill?
Yes. Complain to the operator first, then go to the dispute body if you cannot agree.
