How long can a phone or internet contract last in Hungary, and how do I end it?
A fixed-term phone or internet contract may last at most 12 months, and the provider must first offer you an open-ended contract. 24 months are allowed only at your request with a device purchase, and the monthly fee may not exceed the 12-month price.
Phone and internet contracts often start with a minimum term and then run on. How long that first term may be, and how much notice you give once it is over, depends on the rules in Hungary.
📜 The rules in Hungary
The details
- When the fixed term ends, the contract becomes open-ended on terms no worse for you, and you can cancel it any time with immediate effect. In the 90 days before, the provider must inform you three times on a durable medium, including your best tariff. (njt.jog.gov.hu)
- The fixed term can only be extended by your express statement. Ordering an extra service or device from the same provider may not extend a bundle's term unless you expressly agree to that. (njt.jog.gov.hu)
- If you leave a discounted fixed-term contract early, the provider may only claim back the discounts you actually used, including a device discount, and may set a notice period of at most 8 days. No other penalty is allowed. (njt.jog.gov.hu)
- Before you sign a fixed-term contract, the provider must tell you, in a verifiable way, the minimum total cost for the whole term. Without this information, any clause with negative consequences for you from the fixed term is void. (njt.jog.gov.hu)
Nemzeti Média- és Hírközlési Hatóság (NMHH)
The telecom authority. It acts on breaches of telecom rules once you have complained to the provider first; it can order the provider to comply or fine it, but does not decide your individual claim.
Békéltető testületek
Free, independent conciliation boards run by the county and Budapest chambers of commerce. They settle consumer disputes about your contract out of court once you have tried and failed to settle directly with the provider.
