📡 Can I use my own router or modem instead of the provider’s in Hungary?

The short answer

During your contract you may use the service at any time and connect your own terminal equipment, for example a phone or router, to the subscriber interface provided on the network.

Many people prefer their own router. Whether your provider must let you connect it, and which details it must give you to set it up, depends on the rules in Hungary.

📜 The rules in Hungary

The details

  • Before you sign, the provider must state any conditions for using the device it supplies, without prejudice to your EU right to use terminal equipment of your choice. (njt.jog.gov.hu)
  • A provider may not make one service conditional on buying another service or product that is not essential for it. (njt.jog.gov.hu)
  • When your contract ends, returning the provider's devices may not be a condition for ending it. You can return them at any of its customer service points and must get a receipt. (njt.jog.gov.hu)
  • After the fixed term or the final settlement, the provider must unlock a device bought with the contract free of charge on request, within 5 working days. (nmhh.hu)

❓ Questions

Will the provider still help me if something goes wrong?

Providers usually support the connection itself, not equipment you bought. Keep their device and settings so you can test with them.

Do I still pay for the provider’s router?

Check your contract. If the router is rented, ask whether you can stop paying when you use your own.

Will my own router make my internet faster?

It can improve your Wi‑Fi, but the speed of the line itself stays the same.
