📝 What must I get before I sign a phone or internet contract in Croatia, and can I change my mind?

The short answer

Before you sign, the operator must give you a free contract summary with the key information (price, duration, cancellation terms, internet speeds). The summary, general terms, special terms and price list are all part of the contract.

Before you sign, you should get the key terms in writing: price, term, speed and how to leave. In many countries a short contract summary is required, and contracts made online, by phone or at your door usually come with a cooling-off period. The rules for Croatia are below.

📜 The rules in Croatia

The details

  • A contract made off-premises (at a stand or at home) or at a distance (phone, internet) can be cancelled within 14 days without giving reasons and without an early-termination fee. If you weren't properly told, this right lasts 12 months longer. (hakom.hr)
  • In a shop: if you didn't get the contract documents and agreed to download them from the website, you can cancel without a fee within 3 days, returning any device in working order with its original packaging. (narodne-novine.nn.hr)
  • A distance contract is concluded only when you confirm your consent after receiving the documents: in writing, by email or by paying the first bill. Paying the bill doesn't count when a new minimum term starts on unchanged terms. (hakom.hr)
  • For fixed internet the contract must state the minimum, normally available and maximum speed and mention HAKOMetar. For mobile it must state your right to a trial period when internet comes via a portable router. (hakom.hr)
  • Only what is in the contract and its summary counts, not what you were told at the point of sale, so read all the terms before signing. (hakom.hr)
  • The operator may not make a contract conditional on signing up for another service or buying terminal equipment. (narodne-novine.nn.hr)

❓ Questions

Does the cooling-off period apply to a contract signed in a shop?

Usually not: it normally covers contracts made online, by phone or away from the shop.

Do I pay for days I already used?

If you asked for the service to start during the cooling-off period, you may have to pay for the days you used.

What if I never got a contract summary?

Tell the provider in writing and ask the regulator what this means for your contract in Croatia.
