📅 How long can a phone or internet contract last in Sweden, and how do I end it?

The short answer

A phone or internet contract may bind you for at most 24 months. Notice may not exceed one month, and after an automatic renewal you can cancel at any time with at most one month's notice, paying only for use (7 kap. 8, 13–14 §§).

Phone and internet contracts often start with a minimum term and then run on. How long that first term may be, and how much notice you give once it is over, depends on the rules in Sweden.

📜 The rules in Sweden

The details

  • With a binding period, you never have to cancel earlier than one month before it ends for the contract to stop then (7 kap. 13 § LEK). (riksdagen.se)
  • At least one month before your last day to cancel a binding-period contract that renews automatically, the operator must tell you on a durable medium when it ends, how to cancel and its best price terms for you. You also get best-price information yearly. (pts.se)
  • Adding services or equipment from the same operator can extend your original binding period only if you explicitly agree (7 kap. 27 § LEK). (riksdagen.se)
  • A binding period longer than 24 months is allowed only for paying off the building of a physical connection, such as fibre, in instalments, and such a contract may not include equipment. (pts.se)
  • If your phone was locked to the operator during the binding period, the operator must unlock it free of charge and without delay when the period ends, if you ask (7 kap. 15 § LEK). (riksdagen.se)

❓ Questions

Can I leave during the minimum term?

Usually only by paying an exit fee or the remaining charges. Some situations, such as a change to your contract terms, can give you the right to leave earlier.

Does my contract renew automatically?

Many contracts run on after the minimum term. Whether the provider must remind you first, and how you can end it then, is in the rules for Sweden on this page.

Does a phone bought with the contract change anything?

A phone or other equipment bought with the contract can come with its own payments. Check whether they continue if you end the service.
