My phone or internet price is going up: can I leave my contract in Sweden?
Your operator must tell you about a price rise or other contract change at least one month ahead and inform you that you may cancel. If you do not accept the change, you can cancel at no extra cost within three months of the notice.
When a provider changes the price or terms during your contract, you may have the right to leave without a fee. That depends on what your contract already said about price changes and on the rules in Sweden.
📜 The rules in Sweden
Price rises built into the contract
No official Swedish page deals with index-linked price clauses as such. Konsumentverket says that during a binding period terms may as a rule not be changed unless a valid reason is stated in the contract.
The details
- The right to cancel does not apply if the change is only to your advantage, purely administrative with no negative effect for you, or required by law (7 kap. 12 § LEK). (riksdagen.se)
- During a binding period, the operator may as a rule not change the terms. An exception is when it gives a valid reason that is stated in the contract terms. (konsumentverket.se)
- If you lawfully end a contract early, the operator may charge only for subsidised equipment you keep, at most the lower of its pro-rata remaining value and the remaining fees, and must then unlock it free (7 kap. 16 § LEK). (riksdagen.se)
- Complain in writing, for example by email, so that you can prove it. Include your customer number, a short description of the problem and what you demand. (konsumentverket.se)
Telekområdgivarna
Free, impartial advice on TV, phone, broadband and fibre subscriptions, before you sign or when you cannot agree with your operator. A non-profit funded by participating operators, with Konsumentverket and PTS on its board.
Konsumentverket
You can report unreasonable contract terms to Konsumentverket. A report does not solve your own case, but it can help other consumers.

❓ Questions
Is a price rise linked to inflation allowed?
It can be, if the contract set it out clearly. Whether it gives you a right to leave is in the rules for Sweden on this page.
How much warning must the provider give?
Providers usually have to tell you before the change starts. Where the rules in Sweden set a notice period, it is on this page.
What if I miss the deadline to leave?
The new price then usually applies. You can still leave at the end of the minimum term, or with notice if the contract already runs on.
