🔄 How do I switch my phone or internet provider in Sweden?

The short answer

A switch of internet provider must happen without interruption as far as technically possible. The new provider must start the service as soon as possible on the agreed day, and any interruption may last at most one working day (7 kap. 18 § LEK).

Switching is mostly paperwork: the network stays where it is, only the company that provides your service changes. Who arranges the switch and how long the service may be down depends on the rules in Sweden.

📜 The rules in Sweden

The details

  • To switch, contact the operator you want to move to. It then contacts your current operator and tells it that you want to switch. (pts.se)
  • Switching does not cancel what you owe under your old contract: you may need to buy yourself out of it if you still have a notice period or unpaid bills. (pts.se)
  • The operator must compensate you for loss caused by delays in the switch or by missed service or installation appointments, unless the delay was beyond its control. It must tell you about this right before you sign (7 kap. 24–25 §§ LEK). (riksdagen.se)
  • If your internet comes in a bundle with other services or equipment, the switching rule applies to every part of the bundle (7 kap. 26 § LEK). (riksdagen.se)

❓ Questions

Will I be without phone or internet when I switch?

There can be a short break on the switching day. Ask both providers for the planned date, and see the rules for Sweden on this page.

Can I switch before my contract ends?

Yes, but while the minimum term is still running you may have to pay an exit fee or the remaining monthly charges. Check your contract summary first.

Do I have to cancel the old contract myself?

That depends on the service and the rules in Sweden. Ask the new provider and keep written confirmation of the end date.
