📲 Can I keep my phone number when I switch provider in Sweden?

The short answer

You can keep your number when you switch. It moves on the day agreed with the new operator, which must start the service no later than one working day after it; any interruption may last one working day at most (7 kap. 19–20 §§ LEK).

You can usually take your mobile or landline number with you to a new provider. You ask the new provider to transfer it, and the number moves on an agreed day.

📜 The rules in Sweden

Compensation

No fixed amount. The operator must compensate your loss from delays or abuse when your number is moved, unless it shows the delay was beyond its control; for abuse you always have the right to compensation (7 kap. 24–25 §§ LEK).

The details

  • You can take your mobile number with you on a subscription or a prepaid card. A landline number can move within the same area code, and to another area code only if the operator allows it. (pts.se)
  • You can still move your number for at least one month after your contract ends. A binding period or outstanding bills cannot stop the transfer, but the old operator can still bill what remains. (pts.se)
  • If the transfer fails, the old operator must switch your number and services back on until it succeeds. On request it must refund remaining prepaid credit; a fee is allowed only if the contract says so and it matches the actual cost. (pts.se)
  • The legal right does not cover moving a number between a fixed and a mobile connection (7 kap. 19 § LEK). (riksdagen.se)
  • Several mobile operators offer to move a landline number to your mobile phone; the landline subscription then ends. (pts.se)

🪜 Step by step

  1. Do not cancel the old contract firstIf you end the old contract before the transfer, the number can be lost. Let the new provider request the transfer.
  2. Get your details readyYou usually need the number, the name on the old contract and sometimes a customer number or transfer code from the old provider.
  3. Agree the transfer dateThe new provider tells you when the number moves. Keep the old SIM or line in use until then.
  4. Check that everything worksTest calls and messages on the new SIM or line, and check that the old provider sends a final bill and stops charging.

❓ Questions

How long does a number transfer take?

It is usually quick. If the rules in Sweden set a maximum time or compensation for delays, you find them on this page.

Can I keep my number if I still owe the old provider money?

You still have to pay what you owe under the old contract. Ask the new provider before you switch whether anything could hold up the transfer.

Can I move a mobile number to a landline, or the other way round?

Usually not: mobile numbers move between mobile providers, landline numbers between landline providers.
