Is my copper phone line being switched off in Sweden, and what happens to my contract?
The old copper network for landline phones and broadband via the phone socket (ADSL) is being closed and replaced by, for example, fibre, mobile or satellite networks. According to PTS, the last parts close at the end of November 2026.
Many countries are replacing old copper phone lines with fibre. Where an official plan exists, it sets how much warning you get and what happens to your contract; the plan for Sweden is below.
📜 The rules in Sweden
The switch-off plan
The last parts of the copper network close at the end of November 2026. If you are affected, the network owner, or the telecom company that uses its network, will contact you about your alternatives.
The details
- Network owners may change their networks as long as they follow the terms of your subscription contract. (pts.se)
- Most people can get phone and internet through the mobile networks or satellite, sometimes with an outdoor antenna. With internet you can also make calls, for example wifi calls. (pts.se)
- Mobile networks are changing too: all 3G networks are closed. Some 4G phones cannot call 112 and are being blocked; your operator contacts you if yours is affected. Do not test by calling 112. (pts.se)
- No rules set what a fibre connection may cost. Konsumentverket's view is that delivery should take at most 24 months from signing; an excessively long delivery time can be seen as not allowed. (konsumentverket.se)
Post- och telestyrelsen (PTS) – Teknikskifte
Follows the closure of the copper and 2G/3G networks and informs about it; the operators are responsible for informing their own customers.
Bredbandskartan (PTS)
PTS's map showing whether broadband is available in an area, and which network owners and service providers operate there.
Telekområdgivarna
Free, impartial advice on TV, phone, broadband and fibre subscriptions, before you sign or when you cannot agree with your operator. A non-profit funded by participating operators, with Konsumentverket and PTS on its board.

❓ Questions
Do I have to move to fibre?
When the copper line is switched off, you need another connection to keep your service. Which options you have depends on your address.
Does the switch cost me anything?
That depends on the plan and on the offers you get. Ask for any offer in writing.
Will my landline number still work?
Usually yes: you can normally keep your number on the new connection. Ask your provider.
