Travelling outside the EU with a plan from Sweden: how do I avoid a huge roaming bill?
Outside the EU and EEA, operators set roaming charges themselves and there is no price cap for calls or data. Receiving calls and calling your voicemail also cost money. You can switch off roaming in your phone's settings.
Outside the EU and EEA, roaming can be very expensive, especially mobile data. Protections such as a spending limit and warning messages exist in some places; what applies with a plan from Sweden is below.
📜 The rules in Sweden
The details
- EU law still protects you on data: a default spending limit of at most EUR 50 (excluding VAT) per monthly billing period also applies to data roaming outside the EU, unless you chose another limit (Regulation (EU) 2022/612, art. 14). (eur-lex.europa.eu)
- You get a warning at 80% of the limit. When it would be exceeded you get another message, and data roaming stops unless you ask to continue. (eur-lex.europa.eu)
- If the foreign network does not let your operator track your use in real time, the limit cannot apply; you must then get a free text message about this when you arrive. (eur-lex.europa.eu)
- Your operator must take reasonable steps to protect you from extra data charges when your phone connects to networks that are not land-based, for example by letting you opt out of them. (eur-lex.europa.eu)
Post- och telestyrelsen (PTS)
Checks that operators follow the Electronic Communications Act. It cannot solve your individual dispute, but contact it if you suspect your operator is breaking the law.
